With two films doing very strong business on Thursday, it seems as though we’re headed for a very crowded weekend. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials did decent business from early shows, but Black Mass was the real success story.
Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials opened with $1.7M from its early shows. That’s up a good bit from the first Maze Runner‘s $1.1M start, but given how sequels are typically much more front loaded it doesn’t seem as though Scorch Trials is getting the $50M sequel bump some were expecting.
Black Mass took in an excellent $1.4M from early previews. That’s higher than last years Gone Girl at $1.3M, which is especially impressive given that Gone Girl had a built in fanbase. Black Mass is a lock for $30M and could even wind up in the $35-$40M range.
Everest opened with $325,000 playing in just IMAX and certain Large Format theaters. That’s a fine start considering there’s no real comparison for this, and might wind up with over $4M this weekend.

2. Black Mass – $35M
