Straight Outta Compton is off to an excellent start with $4.97M from early Thursday 8PM shows, meaning a weekend of over $50M is very likely at this point.
While the usual is for Thursday grosses to take in around 10%, it may be a bit higher than that based on the fanbase but it could also be much more front loaded than that, but it also seems as though it has enough strength to top $50M. This obviously shows that there is intense interest in the film and will end up on the higher end of expectations. Early word of mouth has been very strong, with online buzz going crazy on Twitter and Facebook. The film is currently rocking a very respectable 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Man from U.N.C.L.E failed to break out durings its Thursday shows, but given its older audience that isn’t really surprising. The Guy Ritchie comedy took in $900K last night. In comparison, Spy took in $1.5M en route to $29M, and Kingsman: The Secret Service took $1.4M for a $36M weekend. However, Kingsman was in January where films have much less early demand. It’s a bit early to tell at this point but it seems as though U.N.C.L.E is set for around $16-$20M. It currently has a 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, which certainly isn’t great, but isn’t bad enough to really hinder its performance either.
- Straight Outta Compton – $52M
