Friday Update: “Jurassic World” off to a roaring start with $18.5M from 7PM shows.

With strong brand recognition and a healthy dose of hype, Jurassic World was able to crush the box office with a strong $18.5M start. That’s lower than Avengers: Age of Ultron ($27M) and last years Man of Steel ($21M), but is higher than Furious 7 which had around $15M. However, that was in April when films are much less front loaded on Thursday nights.

Jurassic World will likely be very front loaded this weekend, and probably come in significantly behind Man of Steel, for a few reasons. One, Thursday night showings have been getting more and more of an opening weekend percentage every summer, and also that this was $3M lower. Regardless of all of this, it is still an excellent start for the long anticipated dinosaur sequel.

Updated Predictions

1. Jurassic World: $105.1M

More updates to come.
